ronaldo13, thanks for your informative piece. However the information you posted really did give much information.

If you want to be taken serious in the forums, I suggest you spend 2 weeks of posting gasoline prices and then after that occurs, you will be able to actually use the feature of inserting a link in the forums and post the articiles which you are referencing.

As to your track record... you have been a member since 2010 and have posted in forums as of today, 192 times. at least 8 have been in this hybrid topic.

Companies in the business of keeping cost down, ie taxi companies, are really into hybrids. Check it out and report back...

For some reason my last post Aug 23, 2012 6:57:35 AM would not post properly and I could not edit it.
Should read:
e out, come out wherever you are and be more specific on the details of my track record.
Also: Line five should read Corporation etc

I tried three times to edit this post but the corrections would not print in the post. Strange?

Further to my post of August 14, 2012 3:09:46 PM
I happened to find some information in the Scientific American with regard to the cost of repairing hybrids. And as it happens it looks like I was correct again, although I am too modest to admit it.
Corporation compiled the data for the results from 1,000's of ASE Certified Technicians.
Here are the five top costs reported to "fix" hybrid's:
1. Replace engine cylinder $8,219.97
2. Replace the hybrid inverter assembly $7,391.57
3. Replace a hybrid's inverter assembly with a converter $3,921.68
4. Replace the trans assembly and reprogram the electronic control
module $3,699.34
5. Replace the engine cylinder head assembly and replace spark plugs
$3,608.36
Scientific American, Larry Greenmeier Reporting, 09 May 2011.
Anyone with further information would be appreciated.
Thanks.

GBHUGVA.....140,000 is not very many miles. I would think it should last 140,000 before it needs any major repairs.

Reb4........Could you be more specific on details of my track record?

Ronaldo13, not sure you will see this based on your track record to date, but for anyone else, google hybrid taxi reliability.. Taxi companies rely heavily on keeping vehicles on road. they overwhelming use hybrids for vehicles... Imagine that...

I had posted before to ask if anyone has had any experience repairing a hybrid of any make or model but seems no one has reached the stage where that is happening. I still think that I am correct in expecting some nightmare stories when that happens. In my opinion they are going to be a very expensive proposition to fix and an financial education. Will wait and see if I am correct.

I hate the quality of my wifes crappy prius BUT.. it does get 40-45. I have had to use my wifes prius to track problems she finds, and calc. mpg's are right in there at 41-44 for ours. The gas milage is the ONLY thing I like about it. Our Ford Escape Hybrid is a much more versatile car with far better quality and ave. mpg is 32.5, for a larger, SUV is admerable. Looking foward to Ford's new hybrids getting 47 mpg, this fall!

The leader of the pack for mileage is the VW BlueMotion Passat. Just entered in the Guinness Book of Records as setting a world mileage record of 2,456.87 km on ONE tank of fuel for 89.83 MPG (Imperial). Kind of makes these other cars that have been talked about in these posts as ancient technology, don't you think? Too bad the US and Canadian governments refused to let them into North America. HHHMMMM!!!! does something here stink or what?

P.S. Better check my spelling before MadLaker complains again.

Detfan, the mal-ibu "Eco" should not be compared to the Fusion Hybrid. The "eco" is not a full hybrid. City MPGs are not even close. If your $'s are correct it won't take long at to make up the difference at the pump.

At this time I would say the Volkswagon BlueMotion Passat is the leader by far. It gets 89.93 MPG (Imperial) and is already on the road an doing just fine. Kind of makes the others that have been presented here in this Topic
look not so great. Only available in Europe and denied importation by the
US and Canadian governments (better known as corporate puppets). Enjoy the "great ones" that are being hoisted on you in north america by corporate interests. Oh, and by the way this is what some posters here call "free enterprise".

Looks like Toyota is taking Hybrid to the Avalon coming out next year...
2013 Avalon To Be Offered In A Hybrid Version

"The Avalon Hybrid achieves a total system output of 200 horsepower and offers three modes of operation: EV, ECO and SPORT. In addition to its aforementioned 40 mpg combined rating, the EPA says the Avalon Hybrid will achieve 40 mpg in the city, and a 39 mpg on the highway. "

No word on price for this vehicle, though it was designed in Michigan, and will be built at KY production facilty...

"Has anyone done any major repairs to a hybird? If so what were the costs?"

On hybrids of all makes and models the entire hybrid system comes under the Federal emissions warranty of 100,000 miles or 8 years. Some states extend this to 150,000/10 years. So during that time any hybrid-unique failure will be paid 100% by warranty.

"So far the most fun hybrid I have driven was the Nissan Altima hybrid. It just felt like a very taut, powerful really good handling car that also got better than 40 mpg."

Yes, but you don't go powering around having fun AND get 40 MPG. To a limited extent there are motorcycles you can do that with, but not just any motorcycle.

The best hybrid (or any type) car will be the one you own because no matter the features of the ones you do no own the one you own and drive is the one which is performing for YOU.

I have a Prius and when driven modestly on my daily under 45 MPH 10 mile each way commute delivers an honest 55 MPG. Better than 45 MPG at 70 MPH.

ronaldo, no, had my 2010 Prius for just over 2 years and haven't had any repairs, oil changes were included with the price of vehicle.

If anyone is considering purchasing a hybrid, as prices drop, this is the time to buy one. Typically demand is less as gas prices drop and people look at the highway mile and disregard the combined miles...

gvan, ford fusion will be available this fall.. So we will see in sometime after September (Wonder if it will make it then)...

I would imagine they will be pretty close with the MPG.. They are the ones that test it in the 1st place, though epa may test the "leaders"...

It's $28K but bet the 2013 won't be found for that price,
When I tried to find a 2010, the "base" models were no where to be found..

The 2013 Ford Fusion hybrid supposedly gets 47 mpg. I don't believe the official EPA numbers are available yet but this is the mpg Ford claims it will get. This is a car I might be interested in buying. The Prius gets slightly better mileage but it is smaller than the Fusion.

I have a 2011 Prius and I'm averaging 53.1 mpg on this tank with over 230 miles from the last fill up. You just have to know how to drive it, I could get about 40 mpg too if I drove like a knob head.

the wifes P.O.S. 2004 prius only gets 41 not 60 like they said, but she got it for 7grand, ok beater I guess, but the Ford is our favorite, better quality for sure!

The 2004 Prius hybrid EPA rating is 48 city/45 highway and 46 combined. Actual users ranged from a low of 34 to a high of 67 and 47.5 combined. This is based on 83 actual users which would be real world figures. 78 of the 83 drivers exceeded your mpg figures.
