Grocery stores are starting to charge for plastic bags, or give points, or 3 cents per bag that you bring and use. One chain sells you a shopping bag made of recycled plastic and gives lifetime bag replacement as they wear out.

I also made a compost barrel and a couple piles outside so that we can help our yard & garden do better. Sure makes for a lot less garbage. I also save some cardboard to help make fires in the fireplace. I save all the wood & twigs that fall off the trees to use in the fireplace and any outdoor fires we might have.

" But now bottles can be made much cheaper, due to improved manufacturing techniques and materials. It makes reuse less cost effective.

Buying high end, heavy walled stainless pipe from the scrap yard was a fraction of the cost of buying new lame regular steel exaust pipe from the auto parts store.

In fifteen years since our recycling program started with curb side pick up we went from two to three garbage cans a week to one garbage can every four weeks. Thats was for a family of five.

When they took questions I asked how they were going to pay us for our valuable stuff. After all, I was already getting money for my aluminum, and I wanted to know why I should give them my business. They actually expected me to just GIVE them my recyclables! They weren't going to pay me ANYTHING for them! What crooks!

I don't know what you are talking about, but a trailer full of scrap steel gets me like $40. Last time I demo-ed a double wide, all the steel, aluminum, window and door frames, roofing and siding got me nearly $1,000 (not counting the gun and tools I found).

I consider it an investment in the future - for future generations who are unable to make the decision for themselves(including my unborn children and grandchildren). Too bad the return on investment of my time is so minimal and/or nonexistent. With population (consumers)numbers increasing almost exponentially (except in Western Europe)and the limited amount of natural resources available...at least until we start mining the moon and/or asteroids...recycling is the most efficient and economic means of maintaining supply. I occasionally recycle lead. I collect tire weights, melt them down into 5 pound blocks and sell them on ebay. The funny thing is lot of tire places don't know how to get rid of the used and broken tire weights that pile up around there ballancer with out paying some one to take them.

I recycled a Mac and used the proceeds to buy an iPad. The Apple Specialist asked about the bigger than usual gift card and I told him about the Apple Reuse and Recycling program. It gets bad, IMHO, when a customer tells an Apple employee about stuff Apple does.

Besides, with the Bush-43/Obama (there's enough blame to go around) damaged economy we have now we have a lot of dumpster divers who search the trash for aluminum cans to take in for money.
